Welcome, students! Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Level (IAL) Mathematics is a flexible modular curriculum. 1. Course Introduction

Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Level in Mathematics follows a modular design, enabling candidates to take examinations throughout the course. The qualification is built from different units, allowing students to specialize in areas of Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, Statistics, or Decision Mathematics.

Assessment Outline

To obtain an International Advanced Level (IAL) in Mathematics, candidates must Cash-In six modules, including the compulsory Pure Mathematics units (P1, P2, P3, P4) plus two optional application units.

Pure Mathematics 4 (P4) Parametrics, partial fractions, vectors, integration Written exam — 1 hour 30 minutes 75 marks 16.7% (16.7% of IAL)
Optional Unit 1 (e.g., S1 / M1) Probability and statistics or basic mechanics Written exam — 1 hour 30 minutes 75 marks 16.7%
Optional Unit 2 (e.g., S2 / M2 / D1) Advanced statistics, dynamics, or decision math Written exam — 1 hour 30 minutes 75 marks 16.7%

Cash-In and Grading Criteria

  • IAS Level Award: Compiled from 3 units (P1, P2 + one application unit like S1 or M1). The maximum raw marks are converted to a Uniform Mark Scale (UMS) maximum of 300 UMS.
  • IAL Level Award: Compiled from 6 units (P1, P2, P3, P4 + two application units) with a maximum of 600 UMS marks.
  • A* Criteria: To achieve an A* grade overall, candidates must score at least 480 UMS marks in total across the 6 units, and score at least 180 out of 200 UMS marks on P3 and P4 combined.

2. Coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane

2.2 Parallel and perpendicular lines.

3. Trigonometry

3.1 Sine rule, cosine rule and triangle area.
3.2 Radian measure.
3.3 Sine, cosine and tangent functions.

4. Differentiation

4.1 The derivative and rates of change.
4.2 Differentiation of polynomials.
4.3 Gradients, tangents and normals.

5. Integration

5.1 Indefinite integration.
5.2 Integration of polynomials.
