Welcome to the official study portal for Cambridge International AS & A Level Further Mathematics (9231). This rigorous, higher-level curriculum is designed for high-achieving mathematics students preparing for university degrees in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, and Theoretical Physics at elite institutions worldwide (such as Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, MIT, and Ivy League universities).
1. Course Introduction
Cambridge International AS & A Level Further Mathematics (9231) extends mathematical understanding beyond standard A-Level Mathematics (9709), introducing advanced university-level concepts including Proof by Mathematical Induction, Linear Spaces, Matrix Transformations, Polar Coordinates, Complex Numbers, Second-order Differential Equations, Non-linear Mechanics, and Advanced Inferential Statistics.
Assessment Structure
The 9231 qualification comprises four specialized papers. Candidates can achieve either a Cambridge International AS Level (2 papers) or a full Cambridge International A Level (all 4 papers).
| Paper Component | Duration & Marks | Curriculum Content & Calculator Policy | A-Level Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Further Pure Mathematics 1 | 2 hours 75 marks |
Polynomial Roots, Rational Functions & Graphs, Summation of Series, Matrices & 2D/3D Linear Transformations, Polar Coordinates ($r = f(\theta)$), Vectors in 3D Space, Proof by Induction. Calculator permitted. | 30% (60% of AS) |
| Paper 2: Further Pure Mathematics 2 | 2 hours 75 marks |
Hyperbolic Functions, Maclaurin & Taylor Series, Arc Length & Surface Area of Revolution, Linear Spaces (Eigenvalues, Eigenvectors, Diagonalisation), Complex Numbers (de Moivre’s Theorem, $n^{\text{th}}$ Roots of Unity), Second-order Differential Equations ($a y’’ + b y’ + c y = f(x)$). Calculator permitted. | 30% (A-Level only) |
| Paper 3: Further Mechanics | 1 hr 30 mins 50 marks |
Motion of a Projectile, Equilibrium of a Rigid Body, Circular Motion, Hooke’s Law (Elastic Strings & Springs), Linear Motion under a Variable Force, Momentum in 2D (Oblique Elastic/Inelastic Collisions). Calculator permitted. | 20% (40% of AS) |
| Paper 4: Further Probability & Statistics | 1 hr 30 mins 50 marks |
Continuous Random Variables, Sampling & Estimation ($t$-distribution), $\chi^2$-Tests for Independence and Goodness of Fit, Non-parametric Tests (Single-sample Sign Test, Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test), Probability Generating Functions (PGFs). Calculator permitted. | 20% (40% of AS) |
Routes to Certification
Candidates can choose between two official Cambridge assessment routes depending on their academic pathways:
| Certification Route | Required Paper Combinations | Assessment Details & Progression |
|---|---|---|
| AS Level Further Mathematics 2 Papers |
Option 1: Paper 1 (FP1) + Paper 3 (FM) Option 2: Paper 1 (FP1) + Paper 4 (FS) |
Awarded with grades A through E. Provides foundational knowledge in university-level pure mathematics alongside either mechanics or advanced statistics. |
| Full A Level Further Mathematics All 4 Papers |
Compulsory 4-Paper Linear / Staged: Paper 1 (FP1) + Paper 2 (FP2) + Paper 3 (FM) + Paper 4 (FS) |
Awarded with grades A* through E. Candidates can sit all 4 papers in a single terminal exam series, or carry forward their AS Level results from Year 1 to complete the full A-Level. |
