1. Course Introduction

The Physics component of Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science (0653) and Co-ordinated Sciences (0654) covers fundamental principles of physics, mechanics, thermal physics, wave properties, electricity, electromagnetism, and space physics, preparing students to appreciate the physical world and technological applications.

  • Combined Science (0653): A single-award syllabus containing an equal mix of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. It counts as a single IGCSE grade.
  • Co-ordinated Sciences (0654): A double-award syllabus featuring a more detailed, double-weighted coverage of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. It counts as two IGCSE grades.

Assessment Outline (Physics Components)

Candidates who have studied the Core syllabus content are entered for Paper 1 (Multiple Choice), Paper 3 (Theory) and either Paper 5 (Practical) or Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical). Candidates who have studied the Extended syllabus content (Core + Supplement) are entered for Paper 2 (Multiple Choice), Paper 4 (Theory) and either Paper 5 or Paper 6.

Syllabus Structure

The Physics component comprises 6 major topic areas:

Physical quantities and measurement techniques; motion; mass, weight and density; effects of forces; moments; energy, work and power; pressure.

Kinetic particle model of matter; thermal properties and temperature; transfer of thermal energy (conduction, convection, radiation).

General properties of waves; light (reflection, refraction, thin converging lenses); electromagnetic spectrum; sound.

Simple phenomena of magnetism; electrical quantities; electric circuits and electrical safety; electromagnetic effects.

The nuclear model of the atom; the nucleus; radioactivity (alpha, beta, gamma emissions, half-life, safety).

The Solar System; stars and the Universe (Hubble constant, redshift, Big Bang theory).
